Looking back...
We're getting close to the end of the year and I've decided to go back to my list of objectives that I posted in September, see how I did and what I'll be getting a start on in the New Year: Find a second part time job that's flexible enough to still go to auditions (maybe something having to do with theater, like usher)Check. I am now the proud babysitter of an adorable six-year-old named Louise. Ok, so it has nothing to do with theater, but it's a breath of fresh air in my day when I pick her up from school and she makes me laugh, so all in all I think it was a good idea. Go to auditions and get involved in some fun theater/film project that will pay me some money and look good on my resumeUm....er... I went to some auditions... Ok, so I'm still working on it. Find a few workshops on interesting aspects of acting or with interesting directorsCheck. I participate in two weekly classes, one with a director I worked with at the end of last year, and one with a director I met this year who I really like. Both did week-long intensive workshops this fall, which I was a part of and where I learned A LOT. Both the workshops were on classic tragedy and they were complementary: the first being largely an intellectual approach and the second largely emotional/intuitive. Good stuff that I'd like to continue! Solidify the friendships that I've finally started to make in France, and make new friends tooCheck. I had my first real Thanksgiving with American friends, made new French friends who are awesome and kept in touch with some old ones. Knit a baby hat for a friend who's pregnant (I mean for her baby)Well, the baby's born and healthy, an adorable little girl named Leila. The hat is *almost* finished. I just have to add a button and sew the flower on, but since I made the hat a bit big for a newborn, I figure it's ok if I send it after New Years. Do lots of photo albuming (I'm so behind)Oh dear. I'm still far behind on that. I feel a New Year's Resolution coming on! Keep up my blog and try new and interesting recipesCheck. Yes! My cooking blog is growing, thriving and inspiring more and more yummy recipes. Type up the scraps of poetry lying around from last year and edit to see if anything good comes out of themI typed them up, yes, but then didn't do much of anything with them. I'm not sure where I'm going with my poetry these days. Write (poetry, in my journal, etc.)I wrote some poetry but see above. I'm not very diligent about writing in my journal recently. Read (I have so many books I want to read! Currently reading Wide Sargasso Sea, a book I've been meaning to read for years)Check. I read like a maniac the past few months, especially while going through such a difficult time with D. and her dad's illness and passing, books were my drug. Wide Sargasso Sea was good, although not quite what I expected. Currently reading some plays to look for scenes to work on. Did I mention I need to make money too. Well I'll just mention it again in case.Well it couldn't hurt to keep that objective. I'm not exactly making oodles babysitting and mystery shopping, and it would be nice to make some money in connection with acting. But all in all pretty good stuff! Vive 2009! In which I finally start a cooking blog
I'm very proud of myself. I finally fulfilled a dream I've been talking about for a while (also my New Year's resolution this year -- for extra motivation). I started a bilingual cooking blog! http://hopieskitchen.blogspot.com/It's in it's first steps of course, but I've already started to put up a couple recipes and to deal with American / French conversions and ingredient differences. And it's super exciting to have everyone's comments and suggestions about my recipes! | | Thursday, December 6th, 2007 | | 11:55 am |
in which D. starts a writer's blog
So D. finally put together a project she's been talking about for a while: her very own writer's blog! And even though it's in French, I'm going to put a link here because (1) maybe some of you speak a little french, or would like to check out the little images at least that go with her entries and (2) the more links towards her site she has, the better ranked it will be. One of the oddities of the publishing world, at least in France, is that people do surf the net for popular blogs and D. follows one writer whose work got discovered and published that way. The more people that visit, the better! http://dkilhoffer.macreablog.com/ | | Saturday, September 29th, 2007 | | 6:47 pm |
in which i get cheesy
I bought this crazy cheese at the organic market today. Delphine was afraid of it (and she's French!) but very impressed that I wanted to try it. It was a super strong -- very aged goat cheese and sooooo yummy -- even though I keep telling D's it's radioactive and going into fake fits everytime I take a bite ;-) I'm happy though because since I've gone off cow's milk products (as much as possible), I've had to give up a lot of yummy cheeses. They also had this amazing organic parmesan that looked like the king of parmesans. I shall try it next week. (Even though it's not as good for my digestion.) Another amazing salad for lunch. And for dinner, I introduce D to yellow zucchini, which she had never seen. I should maybe worry that my livejournal seems largely devoted to food. But oh well. (I've also decided to titled my journal entries like chapters in Winnie the Pooh...see!) | | Thursday, September 27th, 2007 | | 5:38 pm |

damn foreigner
Being an extra last friday was fun because it was a new experience for me. Otherwise, I was just part of a crowd at a concert so I doubt I'll be visible in the film. The day involved jumping up and down and screaming on and off to the same song for, um, 7 hours... I don't really get movies. Also I'm really bummed because I could've had my first paying job as an actress and I can't because I don't have a stupid work permit. It's not that I don't have the right to work, it's that I have to provide a work contract a month in advance to the bureau of immigration to be able to work -- and in this profession (esp. at the beginning) no one gives you a contract a month in advance!! Anyway, the thing is that the casting director of the film I was in called me yesterday and asked me if I would be interesting in doing a follow up to that scene today (with a smaller number of extras) and get paid this time. And I had to say no because I didn't have time to make it legal. :-( I was super depressed yesterday. I don't want to miss opportunities like that for stupid logistics. So yea, I love Paris but sometimes life sucks as a foreigner. I had an audition for english-speaking actors on sat and that went pretty well. I talked to this really nice guy afterwards who's studying to be a film director and said he liked my acting and if he could use me, he'd give me a call, so we'll see if that goes anywhere. That's the sort of thing that won't be paid anyway probably, so I could do that without worrying about crazy logistics and it'd be good for the contacts and experience. But, I'm still considering coming back to NYC (yuck living in NY!) next year if it turns out to be kind of impossible to actually form a career here as a foreigner. I don't think it's the opportunities that'll be the problem, just the stupid legal technicalities, but it sucks. Today, I'm trying to refocus, not be depressed, and come up with other things to audition for... I miss just being a normal citizen of a country. This whole not being a part of the European Union thing is complicated and stressful. I think the US should join. I mean, you might say it's not part of Europe, but I bet most Americans don't know that. And when I tell French people I'm from Pennsylvania, they say "Oh, is that where Dracula's from?" -- so, whatever, I don't think they'd notice either... Morning Outrage A group of 12 states, including New York and Massachusetts, is suing the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to properly do its job. These states, backed by environmental groups and scientists, say that the Clean Air Act requires the E.P.A. to impose limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted by new cars. These gases are a major contributor to the “greenhouse effect” that is dangerously heating up the planet.
The Bush administration insists that the E.P.A. does not have the power to limit these gases. It argues that they are not “air pollutants” under the Clean Air Act. Alternatively, it contends that the court should dismiss the case because the states do not have “standing,” since they cannot show that they will be specifically harmed by the agency’s failure to regulate greenhouse gases.http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/28/opinion/28tue1.html?em&ex=1164949200&en=a58521ed4c6bcca3&ei=5087%0AJust more proof that the Bush Administration is...absolutely psychotic, I think we can say. End of the trimester auditions are coming up soon, right before Christmas. We have auditions three times a year. It's kind of like a final exam I guess. So everyone is frantically preparing and I'm still not sure what scenes I'll be presenting. Last night, one of my scene partners and I got together with another team and we did our scenes for each other and gave each other feedback and stuff, which was really helpful because it's hard to see youself and your partner objectively when you're in the middle of a scene. Apparently, I'm always smiling, or doing some difficult-to-descibe eye-twinkling, even when I'm angry onstage...so I have to work on that. Other than that, I'm trying to open myself to acting experiences outside the classroom. So far, I've landed the grand role of extra in a movie this friday ;-) I mean, you have to start somewhere and it's pretty exciting because I've never been on the set of a film before so I'll get to see how that all works and meet people and stuff...although film is not really what I want to do as a career. The city's starting to be all decorated for Christmas here, so that's exciting. The other day, Patricia and I were supposed to go see the new James Bond movie together (which we didn't end up seeing because it was all sold out), but she took me on the back of her scooter, which was a lot of fun for a couple reasons, one of which being that I've never been on a scooter before. But also, we passed through the Place de la Concorde, from which you can see the Champs Elysées to one side with the Arc de Triomphe, and on the other the Jardin des Tuileries. Plus you have this church, all lit up for the Christmas season, l'Eglise de la Madeleine and you can see the Eiffel Tower doing its nighttime glittering thing in the background. It was spectacular. | | Saturday, November 25th, 2006 | | 4:41 pm |
expat Thanksgiving blues
I was sick at the beginning of this week because all stressed out about school decisions and life and feeling really homesick. I missed Thanksgiving last year when I was in Aix, and since it's the one holiday where my whole extended family is together, I miss my cousins and everybody! It sucks being far away from family, in a country where nobody even celebrates Thanksgiving. Also, it's always seemed like part of the getting-ready-for-Christmas ritual. Because, since my family doesn't get together for Christmas (not least because they're all jewish), we tend to exchange Thanksgiving/family-get-together presents. Plus New York City is always so Christmas-y at this time of year. It's when it really starts to be winter, but the exciting, festive part of winter (not the oh-gosh-when-is-spring-again part of winter), and we get to tease our cousins from the south who are freezing all weekend. So, to try to combat being really depressed on Thanksgiving, I had a little get together with a few friends (Benoit, Solayman, Emeline, her husband Olivier, and D) at my appt. It's a small appt and I have a tiny kitchen so I couldn't really cook a Thanksgiving dinner or anything, so I did a bunch of fun hors d'oeuvre type things buffet style, and then made pecan pie and brownies for dessert. I love pecan pie...much more than pumpkin pie...so that was my yummy Thanksgiving food (and I had to get my Mom to send my corn syrup so I could make it because they don't have corn syrup in this bizarre county...or really any sweetener besides white sugar and honey. wierdos). It seemed like everyone had fun, so that was cool, but I still miss my family. | | Friday, November 3rd, 2006 | | 2:51 pm |

Raindrops keep falling on my head
This rain is ridiculous. It needs to stop being cloudy and depressing. I do love the occasional rainy day where you could just stay in a watch movies or whatever, but all of senior week when we're supposed to celebrating?? It's a bit much. So I'm hanging out in my room, listening to rain songs...maybe that won't make me feel better, but I was hoping it was sort of a fire fighting fire thing. Maybe I'll go get myself some jeans at the mall. I need new jeans. Last night was pretty fun once we left the senior week events (because nobody was that into them) and made our own party at home with beer, music and taboo! I was very much in the party mood. I'm so glad to be done with this semester and I just want to hang out and have a good time until graduation. I really need to relax! | | Wednesday, May 10th, 2006 | | 1:33 am |
